The following blog contains spoilers for the Richard Castle book Heat Wave is this your one and only warning, leave now if you do not want this book to be spoilt
A New York real estate tycoon plunges to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of a reason to kill trot out there alibis. and then, in the stifling grip of a record heatwave comes another shocking murder a sharp turn in the tents journey into dirty little secrets at the wealthy, Secrets that prove to be fatal secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light.
Homicide Detective Nikki Heat.
Previously in Heat Wave – Heat is able to get Rook’s help in getting a judge to sign off on a warrant which allows them to see the video of the comings and goings of the building. But when they go back to interview Kimberly, Noah tells them Matthew was not willing to sell off things to make the gambling money back. And that Matthew asked for cash. When Kimberly does turn up she tells them Matthew changed his name also, she even is able to give them a name of bookie. Who Ochoa and Raley are able to find.
Heat and Rook are starting to play and gel as team but Heat still doesn’t like the playboy reaction Rook has to a few things.
Five – Even with sirens and lights on the New York traffic still was pain to get though, but in the end Heat is able to speed down Tenth through the two-way intersection at west 57th.
When Raley calls he has custody of Miric and Ochoa is now in pursuit of another suspect Iron Man, who is now heading down the subway and then on to the track. Heat once again runs off after him telling Rook to wait in the car. Her and Ochoa block him off from running deeper into the subway, with them both knocking him to ground. On the way back Rook is a little put out he was left in the car.
Heat keeps the two suspects in separate rooms, her first session was with Miric who is Polish American, and within minutes Heat has him down an amiable who talks and talks but says nothing, He finally tells Heat he and Pochenko they went to see Matthew Starr but he wasn’t there so why did he bring Pochenko Miric was scared of being rodded. Matthew Starr was their ATM so why pull the plug.
Rook thinks he did it and then asks Raley and Ochoa want the police call people like this and gets alternating euphemisms starting with thug and ending with Banger – and as he writes them all down Heat says she will be the miscreant.
Vitya Pochenko unlike Miric is fixed and foucused and when Nikki ask him a question the only thing he says his that when she knocked him to the ground he could smell her, he kisses the air and from the other side of the glass she heard the words ” animal …scumbag…filthy mouth…” which gives Heat the opportunity she makes him show her hands, on the middle finger of his right hand, there was a thick stripe of blanched skin and a cut, the kind a ring would leave, Which happened when Pochenko was working out, but not in a gym.
In Captain’s Montrose empty office Heat lays into Rook for shouting his mouth off but Rook calls her out saying her job is ugly, the equivalent of “What’s a nice girl like you doing in a place like this” which Heat doesn’t like no bit. But how angry could you be at someone who acted like he cared a little.
Half a hour later her and Raley are running though the surveillance tapes it shows a 20 minute gap from Miric and Pochenko coming and going so they did kick Starr about but not kill him. She watches them leave once they lawyer up
What I think – it would appear that Mr Castle can do a really really creepy people, Vitya is one them he may have started out as just the brain and the heavy for getting money out of Mr Starr but in the interview room he doesn’t use many words and what he uses do freak out a few people Rook being one, his outburst behind the glass does put Heat at some what of disadvantage although he believed he might be playing the dashing white night. He’s really just getting in her way which doesn’t really help anyone.
Raley and Ochoa not just along for the ride they are providing a lot of information even if they’re knowledge of popular music is beginning to lose them some money but I have a feeling that Heat also may come to the rescue as she did with their word game.
As for the case it’s not like say a Agatha Christie novel, Reginald Hill or Colin Dexter those people write their books and you meet the characters along the way piecing together the evidence as you go and with an Agatha Christie novel you get the gathering the suspects in the library thing this is slightly different there’s a lot of chasing people down and a lot of pushing about to get the information and not all of it good. and I don’t think Nikki Heat will have her Suspects all sit down in a nice quiet library and let it all out Peace by peace in the end pages.
So that’s your lot for is week as always thank you for reading and I hope you can join me for the next chapter of Heat Wave but until then whoever you are and whether you be bye for now and see you next week.
