The following blog has spoilers for the Tom Clancy flim The Hunt For Red October this your one and only warning.
Based on Tom Clancy’s bestseller directed by John McTiernan starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, The Hunt for Red October seethes with high tech excitement and sweats with the tension of the men who holds doomsday in their hands.
A new technologically superior Soviet nuclear sub the red october he’s heading for the US Coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius, the American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack a long CIA analyst has a different idea he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it because the entire Russian Navy and Air commands are trying to find him too the hunt is on !
Chapter Ten- Periscope Depth – 1:32:57 – 1:43:44
The Red October and the Dallas break the surface of the water and Ramius looks though his periscope on the Dallas Mancuso is doing the same he asks Ryan want he wants to say, Mancuso sends the message to Ramius who is taken back and replys with one ping only, Ryan quickly works out something to tell Ramius, Mancuso thinks he’s out of his mind.
As Mancuso sends the message he asks Ryan how he knew Ramius was going to go starboard Ryan tells him it was 50/50 guess.
Ramius sees the message and sends yet another ping, Ryan knows the Russian want to sink the October and that they may have to do just that.
Walking away from the periscope Ramius tells the crew they most go south he shows Borodin on the maps the same place Ryan told Mancuso to send, as they head there Ramius gives his chief engineer a look.
In green letters we are now at the Grand Bank’s just north of laurentian Abyssal its now 20 hours later
The reactor on the Red October which is critical mass and alarms begin to sound, the coolant system has been contaminated and there is no way to vent it out as a ventilation shaft and ventilation unit has been compromised the doctor believes it may have happened when the Caterpillar drive was sabotaged. Ramius mouse to surface the ship so we can you circulate the air for the doctor believes that the catastrophic failure of the coolant system has contaminated dealership and it is in fact Sabotage but once again ramius does not believe this.
Then Borodin takes the doctor’s side and reluctantly ramius surfaces the ship and evacuates the men to the deck. They now using the rafts and waiting for the Russian Fleet to arrive. However when they reach the surface Borodin sees American warship telling them to remain on the surface are there will be fired upon, ramius takes a few seconds to think and then turns to the doctor, has the doctor to take the man off the ship into the rafts and the officers will go back into the ship submerge and then scuttle it.
The American warship sees this and the caption orders a shot to be fired above the bow of the submarine on the ship a helicopter takes off, and drops a missile into the water and the Russians watch it back in the control room a hand reaches down to the panel and at 200 yards the the missile is automatically self-destructive standing above the control panel is Admiral Greer to his side is Skip Tyler, he Giving orders to the Dallas.
Differences between the book and the film –
The biggest differences are all the things that went on behind the scenes for example Admiral Greer and skip Tyler being on the warship that is able to track the red october is she surfaces, In the book there is an explanation of how they are able to do that with the two helicopter flights, and the near miss of the F22 as it heads home, but here with now have Admiral Greer on the war ship giving the same orders he did in the book, With a few minor changes.
As for our three main stages of operation the Red October, the Dallas and the British ship that took Ryan aboard, we seem to have lost the British ship no longer tails the Dallas in fact it is nowhere to be seen, the two remaining fly out that parts just as the book only minus the cob of the boat in fact the only four remaining characters are captain Marko ramius, captain Borodin, Jack Ryan and Captain Mancuso the doctor of the Red October however does make an appearance but only just after the critical moments, he used to text here is also quite evident as 20 hours have passed during the initial contact with each other and Ryan’s madcap idea of ordering the Red October in to a certain place.
What I Think – As I always said this film is not like most of the 1980s blockbuster films it’s more cerebral than that we have one man working through a system as he tries to help another man defect. There are lot of a long pauses and a lot of quick cuts to people actually working but not explaining in simple terms what they are doing the best example of this is the exchange between the chief engineer about the Red October and Ramius, at the height of telling somebody what to do he glances over at the chief engineer and all he has to do is slightly mad and the engineer understand completely his next move with a modern day or equivalent film of that era you would have to have words used but here simple actions take their place,
In fact much of the dialogue from the book if dialogue is needed is used in full, the exchange between Ryan and Mancuso as they send the signal to ramius to the Periscope is almost completely there in even the joke about the playboy bunny measurements is left in how that would go down with a contemporary audience these days I wouldn’t know but it there all the same.
There are a few interesting bits missing out like how did Admiral Greer and skip Tyler get to the American warship and how is the American warship able to track the Red October did it get its information from the Dallas or has it been watching radar read out all this time thanks to the help of Jonesy on the Dallas.
So that’s your chapter from the Red October flim for this week, But as always if you have done thanks for reading and I hope you can join me next week for chapter eleven East meets West,
