All The Right Words – The Hunt For Red October By Tom Clancy – DVD – Chapter Three – Caterpillar Drive.

The following  blog has spoilers for the Tom Clancy flim The Hunt For Red October this your one and only warning.

Based on Tom Clancy’s bestseller directed by John McTiernan starring Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin, The Hunt for Red October seethes with high tech excitement and sweats with the tension of the men who holds doomsday in their hands.

A new technologically superior Soviet nuclear sub the red october he’s heading for the US Coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius, the American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack a long CIA analyst has a different idea he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it because the entire Russian Navy and Air commands are trying to find him too the hunt is on !

Chapter Two – Caterpillar Drive – 0:18:51 – 0:32:06

We see Jack Ryan walk through a door, and on the screen is printed the words Gracing Dock US naval Shipyard Patuxent Maryland from over his sholder we are shown a submarine being worked on,following him across the working floor he thrown a hard hat which he puts on he heads over to a scaffolding rig where a man with a ginger beard he’s working guy turns around and asks who let him this is Skip Tyler above their head is the DUSV is craned around so they both can see it and Skip.points out that it is they are working on it’s so it will have universal docking clamp so it will make with pretty much anything the British and American navy have.

We are now in Skip’s office he has the photos on he desk and tells Ryan the doors are bigger the standard torpedo tubes and Ryan ask is it possible to launch a ICBM sideways, Ryan and asks could it be a sonar setup, but no to close to the screws then Skip says it could a caterpillar (Magneto hydro dynamic proportion) Ryan doesn’t understand so Skip explain jet engine for the water, water goes in the front and gets squirted out the back it has no moving parts so there is virtually no noise.

Ryan then asks how quiet skip explained that it would sound like whales or some kind of seismic anomaly anything but a submarine engine, they had been working on something like it a few years ago but couldn’t get it to work, Skip then ask they really built this is no mock up or something, Ryan tells him that it put to sea this morning.

Skip lifts his left leg on the open draw of his desk and tell the story of helping his father built a bomb shelters because some parked a few Missiles 90 miles off the coast he points out that this submarine could put a few hundred there and no one would know.  The camera the shows a close up of Ryan face

Back on the Red October we watch as the political office is placed into a see through body bag and carried away out of Ramuis quarters, Dr Petrov (Tim Curry) ask Ramius if alright to which Ramius says yes, Petrov says he will fee better once they put back into base, Ramius questions this Petrov says they Cannot continue without a political officer Ramuis Points out that they do not cancel operations because of accidents, He calls over cooks assistant over to him witnessing removing the political offices missile key from around his neck and keeping it

Petrov what’s to report this red fleet command, but Captain Borodin tells him that the orders state that there must be strict radio silence. Petrov says that it’s most irregular and the reason for to missile keys is that no one man can launch the missile himself. Ramius tells him that he will understand when he addresses the crew and he try to forget Petrov’s comments when he writes his report.

The Dallas Jones is working at the sonar station, with Captain Mancuso (Scott Glenn) watching the monitor, Jones says its a Soviet typhoon class submarine a few seconds later the computer prints out the same thing, a new boat in the water Mancuso tells them start a new tape, and to stay in the baffles of the submarine so no one can hear or see them

The Red October Ramius puts the two keys in separate pockets and walks onto the bridge, which hive of activity when they spots in everybody stops and falls into silence, ramius then asks if the sauna is clear and the contacts above the water are clear to which the answer is there are no contacts and everything is clear, so he will then explain the orders.

He then tells them they will engage the Caterpillar drive and head to one of their major cities and listen to the rock and roll and when they are done they will have to Havana, at this the some of the crew wolf Whistle and when. Ramius stops talking a crew breaks into song the rest of the crew join in.

On the Dallas Jones loses contact. The Red October make contact and Ramius asks are they following to which the answer is no, Borodin is not sure if the singing will make the American follow but Ramius says let them carry on. Back on the Dallas they have Well and truly lost whatever typhoon class submarine they heard, And Jones thinks he heard singing.

We see a gentleman walk down a very on it wooden panel corridor in green on the screen the words read fleet political directive Moscow appear, The gentleman bursts through a set of double doors to be greeted by several people and then head through another set of doors into an office area, He enters the main office and second man Helps he remove his hat and coat. The man points out that there’s a letter from Ramius the first man is happy about it and opens it as he is served tea but he drops the glass as he gets half though the crash sound then becomes the sound of a ringing telephone.

The camera is quickly pulled across the frame rapidly settling into what appears to be a room of paperwork letters and archives Ryan picks it up,

Differences between the film and the book – Well the first thing is that the action is moved from Naval Academy to the shipyards, plus four days in time at this point in the book Ryan is only just getting the CIA Headquarters we areshows Skip as more of a technical man then a teacher. He seen being an older man, he’s not shown walking and in fact the lifting of his leg is the only time it noted,

We have the foreshadowing of the small rescue so which will be introduced later in the book by people on the dockside rather than skip Tyler, Also the story he tells Ryan is something that happens later in the book and with two other people. The whole thing unlike the book is not a formal meeting, here it shown as just two people talking speculating on an idea there is some technical information passed through but is put in such a way that no one is in doubt exactly what the Caterpillar Drive is.

Yet in the book the whole exchange takes place in a classroom with skip using more technical jargon and examples of what the Caterpillar Drive could be there is also the exchange of money at the end and the request to use an IBM machine to play out a few computerised scenarios and models.

As for the aftermath of the political officer being killed on the red october that is handled slightly differently, there is a big shift in tone towards the nuclear missile Amin keys being the main reason the political officer has been killed so that captain Marko ramius can get his hands on them,

And the shift in Doctor Petrov he seems to be more concerned about the political outcome and mindset of the crew rather than the medical,

Once again we are shown Jones’s ability to beat the computer by identifying the acoustical signature of the red october before she switches on the drive and in fact he knows that it is a new submarine even without checking through the record.

The orders Ramius gives to his crew are lot simpler that the ones in the book and in fact the word Cuba is not used. But they do have the same out however and it use as plot point when the Red October switches to the caterpillar drive.

Then we cut to the inside Russian Navy machine, highly decorated Carlos lots of people sitting about and the letter Ramius sent being the main point of the scene and not how the letter got there

What I think – these four scenes are all about contrast and foreshadowing the first being a very informative would skip Tyler which works quite well you get the information across quite quickly and you don’t really need to know all the backstory the obviously was alluded to when Ryan explained to James Greer who exactly skip Tyler was. It’s a neat little trick to change it for a classroom to the yard so you can put in the deep sea rescue submarine it will be later used in a story it saves you build another set and also less character exclamation.

Now the missile keys is a bit of misdirection in the book they are mentioned and in fact ramius gives one of them to Borodin, but throughout the book that is what is believed to be happening ramius will fire the nuclear missiles when he reaches the United States coastline. Here it is not because he doesn’t give the keys away he keeps them. And in fact the doctor thinks he is making a mistake but doesn’t take any further action under threat of being reported by Ramius.

Once again we are shown Jones ability to work out the Sonar System before the computer, and the informal nature of how, he interacts with this captain and the fellow members of the crew.
Yet contrast this with the Russian internal machine we are shown for a few minutes, with the reading of the Ramius letter, and how the men on the Red October stop working when he entered the room.

Well that’s your chapter from the Red October flim for is week, as always if you have done thanks for reading and I hope you can join me next week for chapter four called Ryan’s Briefing.

Narrowboat Ezri – The Littleborough Chronicles – The Refit- Carpets

You would think that with all the refit jobs I have given myself to do and the fact a few are taking longer that I thought, I would get my head down and work them one at a time one, but the more I look around Ezri was a paint, I can see how the little things can be improved, that’s how and why Ezri now has carpet. I had been thinking about some kind of floor covering but just the odd car mat or rug here and there to stop the mess from the towpaths being walked though.
But all the ones I saw would have to cut up to fit and in the case of the car mat there would only be black/grey colour scheme to pick from, So one quick trip to a carpet warehouse and I brought a carpet end roll which will not only cover the steps both front and back but also the space were I keep the tool and dragon box.

image

Setting a carpet in Ezri’s is just one huge jigsaw, nothing on her is a straight line even if they look and feel like it, so it very much a case of finding the best line you can and measuring from that point, then turning the carpet roll over and with a stick of chalk draw the lines needed.
To carry on the idea of light and space though Ezri, as I painted the rest of the walls my Dad did the three steps down which now kept in place with double sided tape. I am going to paint the wood trim a little darker blue that walls to tie the whole thing together.

Narrowboat Ezri – Moving Day – Part One

As you may have guessed from the title, Me and Ezri have moved from the small quay were we have been for the few weeks, I should explain the continuous cruising rules, they say you are required to move to a new place at least once a fortnight.
I thought that being the small quay would have tweaked the rules a little but no the nice people from the Canal and River Trust sent me a letter asking me to move out the general area. Now the tone of the letter is bit big brother using words like “our sighting records” and Ezri’s index number, to read Ezri’s you have to be stood next her or have very good eye sight and if people are watching I would like them to talk to me and the other boat owners not waste money with letters, just a word in friendship that’s all as we are all trying get a long.
So anyway Wednesday, we moved this time heading back up to a place called Summit/Chelbourne were I could stay 24 hours and then move on a little more, a matter of nine locks
Pike House Lock No. 45
Sladen Lock No. 44
Thickone Lock No. 43
Second below Punchbowl
First Lock below Punchbowl
Punchbowl Lock
Second below West Summit
First below West Summit
Which in fact retrace of the journey we had made get down into Littleborough, only this time I knew all the ins and outs
I reached the first of the locks at five past ten am, I know that because I was going to turn this trip into a slow adventure having rushed it the last time.
Ezri tied up the water came out of the lock and Ezri when in, but could I get the water to rise could I sod, the paddle on the top would not move one inch, I was luckily the lock gate was a little leaky so in time the water in rise and Ezri did come up.
As I stood there even a small group of walkers tried but it was only when Ezri was about three foot from the top did someone else try and you guess it up the paddle came, it was almost 11 by the time we reached the next lock which went like clock work.
Tie Ezri up open the paddle let the water out, move Ezri in, up the ladder shut the lock gate, let the water in Ezri rises up, open the lock gate tie up Ezri up shut the gate move on, simple.
The next to lock are not as easy the ladders are some how in the wrong place on the way down they are to far forward so you have to run the roof and on the up ladder is cut off when you open the lock gate.
I guess my luck was in because as I was trying to work out how we were going to do this two volunteer Canal and River Trust people were making their way so they helped me thought the first lock and that was wonderfully simple but as I came out heading to the second I grounded Ezri so they had to help with second lock, that left me with two more to do on my own.
I worked out if got Ezri in to the lock tie her up and slowly opened the paddle then ran to the next lock and let the water out of it I wouldn’t ground Ezri and could be half done for the last lock,
Ezri was rising nicely and I was walking up the lock when group of ten walks came down towards me, I had my windless in hand and they past me one of the woman turned and said “go on get your job done” as if I was some teenage kid, I guess she though I had been sent by someone back down the canal to run forward and open the gate.
I felt like saying a few rude words, it really got to me after all I not just some kid and people who think they know.
And by the time I had worked the last lock it was half past two so it was time stop and pull up for the night back at Chelbourne Wharfe.
Were most two months ago I had half killed myself to get to but now the only thing that prayer on my mind was want I would have for tea.

Let Me Take You Down Page 43

Alec took a deep breath.
“You mean that you have feelings for each other.”
There was another pause this time a little longer
“Yes, but not only that.”
“Your, telling me that someone found out.”
“But I’m not sure who.”
“Deborah, I’m not in Manchester now but if you like I could come and see you tomorrow.”
“I could…” Kyra said
“Who that ?” Deborah asked a little frighten
Alec gave Kyra a quick glance and moved the phone closer
“That was Kyra you met her to.”
“Oh, I remember,”
“Deborah its Kyra again, can ask you something.”
“If it will help sure.”
“Did you write letters to each other ?”
“A few, but not many, is that all ?”
“Yes, all the questions I have for now.”
Alec moved the phone back.
“Deborah, it going to be Ok,”
“I know it will, just want to sleep now.”
“If there is anything more you want I just a call away.”
“Thank you,”
With a soft beep she ended the call Alec didn’t put his phone away he just dallied another number
“This DCI Prideaux I want a car tonight to patrol Wilmslow Road.”
There was the sound of speech on the other end which only Alec could hear, after a few seconds he put his phone away and turned around to face Kyra.
“What besides the letters did you find ?”
“A laptop, web cam and a box of pictures.”
“Right…Hmm when we get back to the station, I want you two…”
“Sorry to interrupt, but.” Lynn said.
She was turning the car into the car park, she found a space in no time and together they walked into the station, when they reached the reception Lynn held out her hand.
“The others are up stairs and this were I have to leave you Sir.”
Kyra and Charlie were a little taken a back when Alec took Lynn’s hand and gave her a hug.
“It was nice working with you.”
She smiled and hugged him back.
“Nice seeing you again.”
Alec let go and gave Kyra and Charlie a smile then walked away.
“Shall we go.”
The room that had been set aside for them was four times as the last and was on the third floor of the building giving them a view across the row of house below.
Sally had emptied all the boxes and neatly stuck up all the photographs on three wipe boards on each side of the room separating the pictures by the wide area shots on one, closer shots of Jenny laying on the canal, and the last board the post mortem one and the copies of the report sheets.
In the centre was a wide table with two laptops and a small group of chairs, Ian was sat in one and Sally the other both heads down working. As Alec opened the door Ian stood up.
“You two look as if you have everything well in hand.”
Kyra and Charlie walked in and stood by Alec
“I have most of the stuff up.”
Sally said looking up for her laptop, Alec walked over to a free chair and sat down
“Kyra, says you have a Jenny’s computer.”
“Its downstairs in the lab and the letters, but I have copies.”
Sally reached across the table for a folder, and then pressed a few buttons on the laptop the screen changed showing two rows of hand-written pages six in all, Kyra took the folder from Sally inside were the same letters, the others looked at the screen.
Charlie leant in to read the first one, Kyra watched as his eyes went a little wide then he backed away.
“The only problem is there not signed so we’re going to have a time finding out who sent them.”
Alec shock his head and moved away.
“They were written by her a friend.”
Sally looked over at him
“Have you read them, How can you just dismiss them like that”
“Her girlfriend wrote them so…”
“So it’s a hate crime then.”
“Could be.”
This time Ian turned around with disbelief.
“Wait a minute Alec, I maybe getting old but I don’t follow.”

Let Me Take You Down Page 42

Tony felt something other then just the whiskey move around inside him, Elli was the only person in his life the meant anything now, without really thinking he started to move back though the other messages when he came across on that Jenny had sent a few days ago
“Why weren’t u there ?”
He sat there just looking down at the words, blinking a few times trying so hard to push the memory away but the alcohol wouldn’t let him it filled the dark places relegating his imagination, helplessly and without thinking he poured what was left off the bottle into the glass.
Taking up the glass he held it up to his face and though the golden liquid he hid and distorted the words on the screen, playing like this he kept his mid away from the memory and pain, but after a few minutes it all came back, darker heavier than before it over took him.
Putting down the glass, he griped the neck of the bottle as if it was a club waving it over his head as the pain rose and built, Tony staggered to his feet and turned around the window, holding the bottle higher he let out a loud scream and threw the bottle into the sink.
It hit the inside with such force that it fragmented and spilt, the neck came away first it rolled around a few seconds as the small metal seal came away, the rest of the bottle broke into more as it smashed itself on the side of the sink.
Tony looked down at the remains, at how sharp the pieces were now, then with half a idea he reached for one larger fragments as he did the song changed it stopped being wild and loud, it be came soft, it was Jenny she was singing Ave Maria, it been recorded at the club after hours the same times the pictures had been taken.
He turned away from the sink he tried to move but his legs buckled under him, he fell he didn’t even try to stop himself he just let it happen on the way he hit his right arm on the stool, but the with all the alcohol inside him he never it.
He pulled his legs up close, rocking a little, the song ended but that didn’t matter the whole house was peaceful now, Tony let the glass shard fall to the floor as he passed out.

Everyone turned to see were the sound saw coming, Alec’s jacket was still over the arm of the settee, Alec walked quickly over and began searching though the pockets, first he reached into the right he felt the tennis ball but didn’t find what he was looking for, he tried the other but when he did find his phone it had stopped ringing he saw the number on the screen but didn’t know it.
Turing back towards Lisa he tired to smile warmly as he put his phone away and folding his coat over his arm,
“I would like to come back tomorrow.”
He held out his free hand, shaking a little Lisa took it and she gave him a hug.
“Please find out who did this. “ She said almost in a whisper
They let go of each other and Alec give a little nod across to Kyra
“You have my word, whatever happened I’ll find who’s responsible.”
Kyra was the first to make her way over towards the door opening it a little, she didn’t step outside only when Charlie walked across to join her did she put one foot outside, Alec was the last to leave giving both the woman a small nod.
Outside a few yards away was Lynn sat inside the police car waiting, she didn’t mind this would count as over time she spotted Alec and two other people making their way towards the end of the street each with a heavy look on there faces.
Charlie was looking for Ian or his car, not finding it he stopped and waited for Alec to reach them.
“We’ve got a lift back to the station.”
He walked over to the waiting Lynn and got in the front passenger side, a few seconds later Kyra and Charlie joined them.
“Kyra, Charlie this is WPC Lynn Russell.”
As Lynn drove back to the station she kept her eyes on the road not sure what to ask suddenly Alec’s phone started to ring again, this made the four of them jump a little, this time he was able to answer it before it stopped.
“Hello ?”
“Mr Prideaux, its Deborah we met this afternoon.”
Alec took the phone away from his ear and pressed speaker phone, so the others could hear.
“Yes I remember .”
“You said I could talk to you.”
“Whatever you want to tell me, will be fine.”
Kyra and Charlie had both turned to the phone.
“Well…”
“Go on
“I’m not sure that it would, you see it maybe.”
“It’s Ok Deborah it will make you feel better if you tell me.”
“Well you see Jenny and I were friends..”
there was a long pause
“Deborah, are you still there ?”
“Yes I’m, I mean that Jenny and I were close.”

Let Me Take You Down Page 41

Kyra walked across the room and sat down on the settee, Charlie didn’t take his eyes from the top of the bookcase.
“Charlie your hairs on fire>”
“What !”
“I know you weren’t listening, I’m been meaning to ask you something.”
Charlie turned around to face him.
“What’s the deal with you calling Alec ‘Boss’
Charlie didn’t answer as the sound of a key turning in the lock of the front door, they both looked across as the door open, followed by the sound of people walking into the house.
“Mum, mum !” Daniel shouted as he came into the front room
Kyra stepped forward
“Your not my mum.”
Daniel turned around back to Alec and his Grandmother
“It Ok, Daniel there’s are my friends, This Kyra and Charlie.”
Daniel looked back as his grandmother again, she smiled at him
“Well my name is Daniel.”
Hattie walked over to the centre of the room
“I would like to see my daughter now.”
“Of course, she’s upstairs.”
There was movement which made everyone turned, stood in the doorway dressed in a long dark blue furry dressing gown and pink slippers was Lisa her hair was still down, the first person to notice was Daniel.
“Mum.”
He ran up to her with arms out for a hug.
All four watched as Lisa slowly reached down a picked him up, Daniel put his arms around her and rested his head her shoulders, Hattie walked over to her daughter, with her free hand Lisa gave a hug to, for a few minutes no-one said anything it was as if the whole world had just stopped.
It was Lisa herself who broke the mood by putting Daniel back down on the floor and letting go of her mother.
“Daniel will you go upstairs for a bit, Grandma and me want to talk to the policeman for a bit.”
Daniel looked up at her.
“But Mum I had a ride in police car, I want to stay here and tell you.”
Kyra stepped forward, she get down to Daniel’s level
“Daniel, do you have any colouring pencils in your room.”
His eyes lit up
“Yes I do, all the colours of the rainbow, just like the song.”
Daniel looked back at both his mother and Grandmother he didn’t say anything just ran off into the kitchen to the stairs but stopped
“Are you coming.”
Kyra got to her feet and followed
With her mother’s help Lisa made her way over to the armchair, Hattie sat on the arm of the chair taking hold of the Lisa’s hand, a few seconds later Alec took off his coat and sat down, Charlie disappeared into the kitchen coming back a with his note pad.
“Before we start, I would like to say how sorry I am for your loss and if at any point you would like me to stop just say.”
“Just ask your questions.” Hattie said
“Your daughter said that Jenny’s father works in Manchester.”
Hattie’s eyes frosted over
“Have you spoke to my ex-son in law.”
“Yes I have.”
“So you think it has to do with him.”
“Mum !”
“I’m not sure, I just want to find out want Jenny was doing in Manchester, that’s all.”
“Its one of those cheap discount shops, I don’t know the name of it.” Hattie said
“Its called Automatic Dreams.” Lisa answered
“Did Jenny always go to Manchester on her own.”
Lisa nodded a little
“I tried to give her some independence, not having to spend all her time with me, that kind of thing.”
“Would she ever stay with her father ?”
Lisa looked at her mother then back at Alec, her eyes a little unsure how to answer him.
“Its Ok Lisa.”
Lisa took a breath
“Yes, but its only been happening in the last few months.”
Alec didn’t say anything for a long time
“Ok now, I would like to go over the last you …Jenny was here.”
Lisa felt her eyes fill with tears again and her mother begin to grip her hand a little harder.

Let Me Take You Down Page 39

Sitting crossed legged she took a few mouthfuls of the warm sweet tea, her eyes all the time on the envelopes she let the tea travel deep inside making her feel a little better, when the mug was half full she put it down on the floor, she reached up to the towel unwrapping her hair she threw it over the back of the chair.
Turning her full attention to the envelopes she picked up the closet one moving it around in her hands she saw her own name and address, she didn’t need to open it because she had read it over and over so many times, she put this one down and picked up another.
This one she did open taking out the three sheets of paper filled with soft female handwriting she skipped to the last page her eyes filling with tears again saw the words ‘with love Jenny’
Deborah took a deep breath and wiped the tears out of her eyes with the sleeve of her jumper then folding the pages back up, without thinking she lined up the rest of the envelopes up in the order Jenny had written them and then started to read them from the beginning, out in the hallway the phone in her coat started to beep.
She stopped reading and fetched the phone, the screen shown a text massage from Amanda so all Deborah did was delete it and go back to reading, she half way down the second page when her phone started to bleep again another message and just like the first one she deleted it but then the phone started to ring, this time she picked it up
On the other end she heard the sound of a very deifying base drum which suddenly stopped
“Hello ?”
“Deb, its Amanda, We’re at the club,” said a very drunk voice
Deborah rolled her eyes
“I would never have guessed.”
“What !”
“Nothing.”
“What you doing ?”
“Nothing”
“You want anything from the take out place?”
“No Thanks.”
“We’re at the club it’s great.”
“I know.”
“Jordan wants to know why didn’t come.”
“I didn’t want to.”
“Your sulking over that dumb girl.”
“You don’t know want your talking about.”
Deborah’s whole body was shaking as she ended the call and dumped the phone at bottom of the bed, for ten minutes she just there thinking looking down at the letters, almost automatically she got off the end and walked into the kitchen switching on the ceiling light filling the room dispelling the long shadows cast.
She ran the bin and started to dig around inside it searching for the card that the policeman had left, she pulled out a pizza box but not finding it she tried again, the second came out but still no card, then there it was resting in the lid of the third box, taking it back into her bedroom she sat on the bed still musing around in her head, looking first at the numbers on the card, then down at the envelopes and lastly at her phone by her feet.

The sound of Charlie’s feet moving down the stairs made Kyra jump a little, she was sat at one side of the table with Ian on the other both had coffee mugs in front of them, next to one of the empty chairs there was a mug waiting for him, the hair brush and other things were all now sat in the middle.
“How is she ?”
Charlie walked over to table and sat
“Fine sleeping now.”
Ian finished the coffee in his mug
“I better get this stuff to the lab.”
He picked up the small pile of things in both hands and made his way around the room
“Need any help”
Kyra quickly made her way around and across the front room to the door she stood there until Ian reached her, opening the door they walked out of the house together.
Outside the evening sky was drawing in, the sun was low and the rain had stopped, Ian walked around the few puddles that remained on the ground Kyra a few steps behind, when they reached his car, Kyra put out her arms so Ian could have his hands free to search for his keys.
He opened the boot and reached around inside making space, he took the things from Kyra and carefully put them inside
“Thanks, we should have a few answers by the time you get back.”
Kyra watched Ian switch on the engine and pulled away, then she turned and walked back into the house, Charlie had moved over to look at the bookcase, his coffee mug still stood on the table untouched, even when Kyra shut the door with a soft bang he didn’t appear to notice.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

“No Thank you Sir, I’ll be Ok.”
Alec got out of the car and after shutting the door he rested his arms across the roof of the car waiting for Lynn, together they walked the six yards back up the street as they did Alec had the feeling that they were being watched as they passed a house with thin lace curtains in all the windows
In a few more yards they had reached number 15 it looked just the same as all the others in the row white PVC widows, neatly laid out front garden and small newly painted wall separating if from the path, opening the small gate and walking up to the front door Alec saw that the flowers in the small hanging basket were the same as the one that Lisa had.
Lynn shut the gate, Alec reached up his right hand and knocked loudly on the door, as he waited for it the answered he turned giving Lynn another small smile trying to relax her even more, but before he could turn back the door was opened
In the open doorway stood a petite grey haired bespectacled old woman dressed in a green knitted shoal around her shoulders covering a cream jumper with a big eyed cat on it, to Lynn she looked like a small china doll, but with deep set shrewd blue eyes were red rimmed from crying.
“Miss Blake…”
The old woman tried to smile but shook her head.
“No, that’s my daughter, I am Hattie Cooper, you better come in.”
She turned away from the door and walked back up the hallway, Alec followed her up the hallway, he found himself stood a huge room spilt in two by a wide archway, ahead of him was a light coloured front room and filled with old furnishings not of which matched, turning his head to the archway he saw the kitchen but unlike the room he was in it was very modern, Hattie walked into the kitchen and over to the line of coats which hung on the back of the door and she began to remove two.
Alec moved across the carpeted floor deeper into the front room to let Lynn in behind, as he did so he saw that sat crossed legged in the gap between the arm chair and the wall was the little boy he’d seen from the photographs, the boy was playing with a small red toy car, He stopped running the car down his leg and looked up at Alec a little disappointed.
“You don’t look like a policeman.”
Alec gave him a friendly smile, then sat down across from him
“I have this.”
Alec took out his ID and gave to the little boy.
“That say’s I am.”
The little boy looked down at the ID, then smiled at Alec.
“Well my name is Daniel, I am five years old, you have a funny name.”

The girls had empted a second bottle of wine, after Elli had talked to Tony and he’d told her want had happened, others had all decided to go into the city leaving Deborah alone, she couldn’t just sit there alone and do nothing, but she didn’t really know hat she could, so alone she had taken a bus back to the places she had to with Jenny, starting at the library then moved to the museum all closed now, but that didn’t matter she just needed, wanted to be there but the rain had come back washing the pain and the memories away, all the time thinking about what that policeman had said.
Soaking wet and shivering with cold she made her way up Parsonage Road, half way up she saw the leaves from the trees had blocked a few of the drains and the water was over flowing onto the pavement, she carefully walked by it, but part way though she didn’t hear or saw the enormous 4×4 making its way up behind her and when she did it was almost on top her.
It missed hitting the whole puddle but its back wheel still sent a tail end of water into the air and over Deborah’s head, but she didn’t care or stop just carried on the few steeps to the darken house, Finding her keys she went inside, she opened the second door just as the phone started to ring but it stopped when she reached for it.
Switching on the hall light she couldn’t bring herself to find out who it was. So she headed down the hallway into the kitchen undoing her coat as she when, Hanging it on the open door and switching on that light to, she started to look around for something to take the chill out of the bones a few minutes later her hands wrapped around a mug of hot sweet tea, she left the kitchen, leaving her coat were it was dripping on the floor.
Pushing the door of her own room open with her foot, she went inside making her way across to desk, putting the mug down she switched on the desk light, filling the desktop with light sitting down on the floor she reached for the bottom drawer sliding it all the way, one by one she took everything out making a small pile next to her feet.
Taking the drawer off its runners she turned it upside down stuck to the bottom of it was a wide brown envelope, she reached inside a took out five smaller power blue envelopes she carefully put them on the desk, then putting all the things back, sitting in the chair she reached for one but then she changed her mid her hands went for the mug, she just held it for a few seconds still warming up her hands, as she sat looking down at the letters.
She felt the rain water in her hair travel down the back of her neck, she shivered a little, getting to her feet and down the mug she went out of the room up the stairs into the bathroom looking for a towel, wrapping it around her head she made her way down stairs, this she didn’t sit in the chair but on the bed kicking off her still wet shoes, she reached over to the desk and picked up both the mug and the envelopes.

She said taking more of the coffee but leaving her hand were it was, Charlie looked a little puzzled at this.
“I mean you don’t sound like the others, you look like a policeman, you even talk like one, but …”
Charlie appeared embarrassed a little
“No I don’t mean like that.”
Charlie relaxed
“I will let you get some rest.”
Charlie started to stand up
“We will find whoever did this,”
Lisa nodded taking one last mouthful of coffee, she tried to the mug on the side, she couldn’t reach so Charlie took the it from her as he did his touched Lisa fingers and was shocked to find the tips were ice cold.
She lowed herself deeper into the bed and under duvet, Charlie put down the mug on the table and switched out the light, the room once again become filled with gloom, Lisa moved around the bed trying to get more comfortable.
Before Charlie left the room he found one of his cards and placed it next to the mug and quietly and softly across the room, when he got to the door he took one last look back, Lisa had curled up again facing towards Jenny’s picture

Outside Alec found the rain had now stopped but the wind was beginning to blow a little so he pulled his coat shut around himself then, followed WPC Lynn Russell though the small gate they made their way up the street to the waiting patrol car, Lynn made her way around to drivers side with a soft click she unlocked the car and got in, she made settled her into the seat as Alec got in next to her.
Following the road around back on to Woodhill Road she reached Peel Way staying left pointing the car onto the duel carriageway she didn’t take her eyes off the road as she reached up to her right shoulder removing her mobile phone from her flat jacket she dropped it down in the pocket between herself and Alec
Alec begin to look around as Lynn made the turn, for the first time he saw there was a huge gap in the fence which ran along the carriageway as they came closer the gap was filled by a new system of traffic lights, beyond them a was a new road to which travelled down into a small dip which at one time had just been a small green field, but now it was a construction site of a half built ten storey office block.
Beyond the moving the cars Alec saw the old familiar TA barracks and the shadow of the Saint Mary the Virgin church in the centre of town, he felt the car slow as Lynn put her foot down on the brake and moved into the centre of the road as they came towards a set of lights.
It was only when they had pulled away from the lights and Alec was once again watching the traffic did his eyes did his eyes catch sight of the huge 120 foot construction crane peering above the flat of the superstore.
“I see you’ve noticed the changes.”
Alec smiled a little shaking his head
“No they happened before I left.”
Lynn steered the car into the third of the four lanes, which headed across the yellow junction box, past a row of advertising boards and on to Bell Lane, she drove the car over the junction box following the line of traffic as it made its way up Bell Lane.
The car in front carried on up the as they reached a supermarket on their left and the pointy were the road became Rochdale Old Road the car turned off into the car, Lynn put her foot down and closed the gap between herself and a small yellow Vauxhall van a few meter ahead.
Alec found himself beginning to relax as the building and houses on each side around them became more and more familiar in his head he counted the time it would take them to reach the bridge that took the motorway over their heads, as the car passed under it he gave a small smile, the road grew narrow with parked cars on each side.
They made their way up the little hill still following the little yellow van, coming out from under the bridge the first thing Alec saw that even after all these years was the Aladdin’s Cave hardware shop., a triangular shaped building which lived up to it’s name the whole place was full from floor to ceiling of all manner of things, so much so that many of the items spilled out of shop doorway and were hung on the wall that faced the road.
All to soon they were passing it and Alec’s view was taken up by a row of houses a few were just plane red brick but there was one painted all black just above the front door there was a white prism with a beam of light entering one end and out the other a rainbow
A few seconds later Lynn slowed down the car as she begin to make a right hand turn and the little yellow van carried on up the road, the on coming traffic became less and less finally leaving a gap for Lynn to turn into Battersby Street.
After finding a space facing back up the street in between a sliver 4X4 and a light blue people carrier, Lynn quickly shut off the engine and took a deep breath to calm her nerves, Alec gave her a modest smile.
“Would you like a minute?”
