Kyra walked across the room and sat down on the settee, Charlie didn’t take his eyes from the top of the bookcase.
“Charlie your hairs on fire>”
“What !”
“I know you weren’t listening, I’m been meaning to ask you something.”
Charlie turned around to face him.
“What’s the deal with you calling Alec ‘Boss’
Charlie didn’t answer as the sound of a key turning in the lock of the front door, they both looked across as the door open, followed by the sound of people walking into the house.
“Mum, mum !” Daniel shouted as he came into the front room
Kyra stepped forward
“Your not my mum.”
Daniel turned around back to Alec and his Grandmother
“It Ok, Daniel there’s are my friends, This Kyra and Charlie.”
Daniel looked back as his grandmother again, she smiled at him
“Well my name is Daniel.”
Hattie walked over to the centre of the room
“I would like to see my daughter now.”
“Of course, she’s upstairs.”
There was movement which made everyone turned, stood in the doorway dressed in a long dark blue furry dressing gown and pink slippers was Lisa her hair was still down, the first person to notice was Daniel.
“Mum.”
He ran up to her with arms out for a hug.
All four watched as Lisa slowly reached down a picked him up, Daniel put his arms around her and rested his head her shoulders, Hattie walked over to her daughter, with her free hand Lisa gave a hug to, for a few minutes no-one said anything it was as if the whole world had just stopped.
It was Lisa herself who broke the mood by putting Daniel back down on the floor and letting go of her mother.
“Daniel will you go upstairs for a bit, Grandma and me want to talk to the policeman for a bit.”
Daniel looked up at her.
“But Mum I had a ride in police car, I want to stay here and tell you.”
Kyra stepped forward, she get down to Daniel’s level
“Daniel, do you have any colouring pencils in your room.”
His eyes lit up
“Yes I do, all the colours of the rainbow, just like the song.”
Daniel looked back at both his mother and Grandmother he didn’t say anything just ran off into the kitchen to the stairs but stopped
“Are you coming.”
Kyra got to her feet and followed
With her mother’s help Lisa made her way over to the armchair, Hattie sat on the arm of the chair taking hold of the Lisa’s hand, a few seconds later Alec took off his coat and sat down, Charlie disappeared into the kitchen coming back a with his note pad.
“Before we start, I would like to say how sorry I am for your loss and if at any point you would like me to stop just say.”
“Just ask your questions.” Hattie said
“Your daughter said that Jenny’s father works in Manchester.”
Hattie’s eyes frosted over
“Have you spoke to my ex-son in law.”
“Yes I have.”
“So you think it has to do with him.”
“Mum !”
“I’m not sure, I just want to find out want Jenny was doing in Manchester, that’s all.”
“Its one of those cheap discount shops, I don’t know the name of it.” Hattie said
“Its called Automatic Dreams.” Lisa answered
“Did Jenny always go to Manchester on her own.”
Lisa nodded a little
“I tried to give her some independence, not having to spend all her time with me, that kind of thing.”
“Would she ever stay with her father ?”
Lisa looked at her mother then back at Alec, her eyes a little unsure how to answer him.
“Its Ok Lisa.”
Lisa took a breath
“Yes, but its only been happening in the last few months.”
Alec didn’t say anything for a long time
“Ok now, I would like to go over the last you …Jenny was here.”
Lisa felt her eyes fill with tears again and her mother begin to grip her hand a little harder.

Sitting crossed legged she took a few mouthfuls of the warm sweet tea, her eyes all the time on the envelopes she let the tea travel deep inside making her feel a little better, when the mug was half full she put it down on the floor, she reached up to the towel unwrapping her hair she threw it over the back of the chair.
Turning her full attention to the envelopes she picked up the closet one moving it around in her hands she saw her own name and address, she didn’t need to open it because she had read it over and over so many times, she put this one down and picked up another.
This one she did open taking out the three sheets of paper filled with soft female handwriting she skipped to the last page her eyes filling with tears again saw the words ‘with love Jenny’
Deborah took a deep breath and wiped the tears out of her eyes with the sleeve of her jumper then folding the pages back up, without thinking she lined up the rest of the envelopes up in the order Jenny had written them and then started to read them from the beginning, out in the hallway the phone in her coat started to beep.
She stopped reading and fetched the phone, the screen shown a text massage from Amanda so all Deborah did was delete it and go back to reading, she half way down the second page when her phone started to bleep again another message and just like the first one she deleted it but then the phone started to ring, this time she picked it up
On the other end she heard the sound of a very deifying base drum which suddenly stopped
“Hello ?”
“Deb, its Amanda, We’re at the club,” said a very drunk voice
Deborah rolled her eyes
“I would never have guessed.”
“What !”
“Nothing.”
“What you doing ?”
“Nothing”
“You want anything from the take out place?”
“No Thanks.”
“We’re at the club it’s great.”
“I know.”
“Jordan wants to know why didn’t come.”
“I didn’t want to.”
“Your sulking over that dumb girl.”
“You don’t know want your talking about.”
Deborah’s whole body was shaking as she ended the call and dumped the phone at bottom of the bed, for ten minutes she just there thinking looking down at the letters, almost automatically she got off the end and walked into the kitchen switching on the ceiling light filling the room dispelling the long shadows cast.
She ran the bin and started to dig around inside it searching for the card that the policeman had left, she pulled out a pizza box but not finding it she tried again, the second came out but still no card, then there it was resting in the lid of the third box, taking it back into her bedroom she sat on the bed still musing around in her head, looking first at the numbers on the card, then down at the envelopes and lastly at her phone by her feet.

The sound of Charlie’s feet moving down the stairs made Kyra jump a little, she was sat at one side of the table with Ian on the other both had coffee mugs in front of them, next to one of the empty chairs there was a mug waiting for him, the hair brush and other things were all now sat in the middle.
“How is she ?”
Charlie walked over to table and sat
“Fine sleeping now.”
Ian finished the coffee in his mug
“I better get this stuff to the lab.”
He picked up the small pile of things in both hands and made his way around the room
“Need any help”
Kyra quickly made her way around and across the front room to the door she stood there until Ian reached her, opening the door they walked out of the house together.
Outside the evening sky was drawing in, the sun was low and the rain had stopped, Ian walked around the few puddles that remained on the ground Kyra a few steps behind, when they reached his car, Kyra put out her arms so Ian could have his hands free to search for his keys.
He opened the boot and reached around inside making space, he took the things from Kyra and carefully put them inside
“Thanks, we should have a few answers by the time you get back.”
Kyra watched Ian switch on the engine and pulled away, then she turned and walked back into the house, Charlie had moved over to look at the bookcase, his coffee mug still stood on the table untouched, even when Kyra shut the door with a soft bang he didn’t appear to notice.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

Let Me Take You Down Page 38

“No Thank you Sir, I’ll be Ok.”
Alec got out of the car and after shutting the door he rested his arms across the roof of the car waiting for Lynn, together they walked the six yards back up the street as they did Alec had the feeling that they were being watched as they passed a house with thin lace curtains in all the windows
In a few more yards they had reached number 15 it looked just the same as all the others in the row white PVC widows, neatly laid out front garden and small newly painted wall separating if from the path, opening the small gate and walking up to the front door Alec saw that the flowers in the small hanging basket were the same as the one that Lisa had.
Lynn shut the gate, Alec reached up his right hand and knocked loudly on the door, as he waited for it the answered he turned giving Lynn another small smile trying to relax her even more, but before he could turn back the door was opened
In the open doorway stood a petite grey haired bespectacled old woman dressed in a green knitted shoal around her shoulders covering a cream jumper with a big eyed cat on it, to Lynn she looked like a small china doll, but with deep set shrewd blue eyes were red rimmed from crying.
“Miss Blake…”
The old woman tried to smile but shook her head.
“No, that’s my daughter, I am Hattie Cooper, you better come in.”
She turned away from the door and walked back up the hallway, Alec followed her up the hallway, he found himself stood a huge room spilt in two by a wide archway, ahead of him was a light coloured front room and filled with old furnishings not of which matched, turning his head to the archway he saw the kitchen but unlike the room he was in it was very modern, Hattie walked into the kitchen and over to the line of coats which hung on the back of the door and she began to remove two.
Alec moved across the carpeted floor deeper into the front room to let Lynn in behind, as he did so he saw that sat crossed legged in the gap between the arm chair and the wall was the little boy he’d seen from the photographs, the boy was playing with a small red toy car, He stopped running the car down his leg and looked up at Alec a little disappointed.
“You don’t look like a policeman.”
Alec gave him a friendly smile, then sat down across from him
“I have this.”
Alec took out his ID and gave to the little boy.
“That say’s I am.”
The little boy looked down at the ID, then smiled at Alec.
“Well my name is Daniel, I am five years old, you have a funny name.”

The girls had empted a second bottle of wine, after Elli had talked to Tony and he’d told her want had happened, others had all decided to go into the city leaving Deborah alone, she couldn’t just sit there alone and do nothing, but she didn’t really know hat she could, so alone she had taken a bus back to the places she had to with Jenny, starting at the library then moved to the museum all closed now, but that didn’t matter she just needed, wanted to be there but the rain had come back washing the pain and the memories away, all the time thinking about what that policeman had said.
Soaking wet and shivering with cold she made her way up Parsonage Road, half way up she saw the leaves from the trees had blocked a few of the drains and the water was over flowing onto the pavement, she carefully walked by it, but part way though she didn’t hear or saw the enormous 4×4 making its way up behind her and when she did it was almost on top her.
It missed hitting the whole puddle but its back wheel still sent a tail end of water into the air and over Deborah’s head, but she didn’t care or stop just carried on the few steeps to the darken house, Finding her keys she went inside, she opened the second door just as the phone started to ring but it stopped when she reached for it.
Switching on the hall light she couldn’t bring herself to find out who it was. So she headed down the hallway into the kitchen undoing her coat as she when, Hanging it on the open door and switching on that light to, she started to look around for something to take the chill out of the bones a few minutes later her hands wrapped around a mug of hot sweet tea, she left the kitchen, leaving her coat were it was dripping on the floor.
Pushing the door of her own room open with her foot, she went inside making her way across to desk, putting the mug down she switched on the desk light, filling the desktop with light sitting down on the floor she reached for the bottom drawer sliding it all the way, one by one she took everything out making a small pile next to her feet.
Taking the drawer off its runners she turned it upside down stuck to the bottom of it was a wide brown envelope, she reached inside a took out five smaller power blue envelopes she carefully put them on the desk, then putting all the things back, sitting in the chair she reached for one but then she changed her mid her hands went for the mug, she just held it for a few seconds still warming up her hands, as she sat looking down at the letters.
She felt the rain water in her hair travel down the back of her neck, she shivered a little, getting to her feet and down the mug she went out of the room up the stairs into the bathroom looking for a towel, wrapping it around her head she made her way down stairs, this she didn’t sit in the chair but on the bed kicking off her still wet shoes, she reached over to the desk and picked up both the mug and the envelopes.

She said taking more of the coffee but leaving her hand were it was, Charlie looked a little puzzled at this.
“I mean you don’t sound like the others, you look like a policeman, you even talk like one, but …”
Charlie appeared embarrassed a little
“No I don’t mean like that.”
Charlie relaxed
“I will let you get some rest.”
Charlie started to stand up
“We will find whoever did this,”
Lisa nodded taking one last mouthful of coffee, she tried to the mug on the side, she couldn’t reach so Charlie took the it from her as he did his touched Lisa fingers and was shocked to find the tips were ice cold.
She lowed herself deeper into the bed and under duvet, Charlie put down the mug on the table and switched out the light, the room once again become filled with gloom, Lisa moved around the bed trying to get more comfortable.
Before Charlie left the room he found one of his cards and placed it next to the mug and quietly and softly across the room, when he got to the door he took one last look back, Lisa had curled up again facing towards Jenny’s picture

Outside Alec found the rain had now stopped but the wind was beginning to blow a little so he pulled his coat shut around himself then, followed WPC Lynn Russell though the small gate they made their way up the street to the waiting patrol car, Lynn made her way around to drivers side with a soft click she unlocked the car and got in, she made settled her into the seat as Alec got in next to her.
Following the road around back on to Woodhill Road she reached Peel Way staying left pointing the car onto the duel carriageway she didn’t take her eyes off the road as she reached up to her right shoulder removing her mobile phone from her flat jacket she dropped it down in the pocket between herself and Alec
Alec begin to look around as Lynn made the turn, for the first time he saw there was a huge gap in the fence which ran along the carriageway as they came closer the gap was filled by a new system of traffic lights, beyond them a was a new road to which travelled down into a small dip which at one time had just been a small green field, but now it was a construction site of a half built ten storey office block.
Beyond the moving the cars Alec saw the old familiar TA barracks and the shadow of the Saint Mary the Virgin church in the centre of town, he felt the car slow as Lynn put her foot down on the brake and moved into the centre of the road as they came towards a set of lights.
It was only when they had pulled away from the lights and Alec was once again watching the traffic did his eyes did his eyes catch sight of the huge 120 foot construction crane peering above the flat of the superstore.
“I see you’ve noticed the changes.”
Alec smiled a little shaking his head
“No they happened before I left.”
Lynn steered the car into the third of the four lanes, which headed across the yellow junction box, past a row of advertising boards and on to Bell Lane, she drove the car over the junction box following the line of traffic as it made its way up Bell Lane.
The car in front carried on up the as they reached a supermarket on their left and the pointy were the road became Rochdale Old Road the car turned off into the car, Lynn put her foot down and closed the gap between herself and a small yellow Vauxhall van a few meter ahead.
Alec found himself beginning to relax as the building and houses on each side around them became more and more familiar in his head he counted the time it would take them to reach the bridge that took the motorway over their heads, as the car passed under it he gave a small smile, the road grew narrow with parked cars on each side.
They made their way up the little hill still following the little yellow van, coming out from under the bridge the first thing Alec saw that even after all these years was the Aladdin’s Cave hardware shop., a triangular shaped building which lived up to it’s name the whole place was full from floor to ceiling of all manner of things, so much so that many of the items spilled out of shop doorway and were hung on the wall that faced the road.
All to soon they were passing it and Alec’s view was taken up by a row of houses a few were just plane red brick but there was one painted all black just above the front door there was a white prism with a beam of light entering one end and out the other a rainbow
A few seconds later Lynn slowed down the car as she begin to make a right hand turn and the little yellow van carried on up the road, the on coming traffic became less and less finally leaving a gap for Lynn to turn into Battersby Street.
After finding a space facing back up the street in between a sliver 4X4 and a light blue people carrier, Lynn quickly shut off the engine and took a deep breath to calm her nerves, Alec gave her a modest smile.
“Would you like a minute?”

the bristles with his free hand he flicked open the bag and put the brush inside, then he carried on searching
Slowly he lifted out the black box he opened it up and found more make-up this time in small neat little trays, in the top of the box lid was a small mirror shaking his head he put it back and picked up the other, just as he standing up the sunlight glinted of a set sliver guitar picks, he pushed them to one side to see there was a small photograph and three CD, he shut the draw then turned towards the wardrobe.
Kyra was lifting out a pair of blue high heel shoes she turned one of them upside down shaking it a little but nothing fell out so she put it back she did it with the four more pairs but each time she found nothing shutting the wardrobe door she turn to face Charlie
“OK Let’s go.” He said walking to the door
Kyra made a face and walked to the end of the bed of the bed, bending down little she reached under it a pulled out a plastic box with a blue lid, she lifted the lid, inside were a bunch of school text books and excise books,
She reached down again and pulled out a second box but inside this one there were two mobile phone changers, a pink Dell Laptop, power cables and a web cam, taking out the laptop putting ti to one side she saw small pile of envelopes all tied up with pink ribbon, put them on top of the laptop she tidied away the rest of things and pushed both boxes back under the bed
“Now we can go.”
She handed over the laptop and the envelopes, Charlie put them into a second bag and they walked down the stairs.
Ian was on the other side of the room picking up a mug, Charlie couldn’t see Alec but as Kyra made her way towards the table she noticed the though the door Alec was making his way out the front door followed by a uniformed WPC, Ian made his way across the room with the mug as Charlie started to remove his gloves.
“Excuse me a minute.”
“Your OK I’ll do that.” Charlie said dropping a the second glove in the bin
Ian handed over the mug, carefully not to spill any of the coffee, Charlie made his way back up the stairs, he saw though the gap in the door that she was laying under the duvet with her eyes shut..
He took a few steps into the room but as he did so the floor boards creaked a little, Lisa moved around in the bed and looked towards the door.
“I’m awake you know.”
Lisa sat up and pulled the duvet around herself
“Sorry I..”
Charlie hold out the mug, but before taking it from him Lisa used her right hand to switched on a small light, Charlie saw she had changed into a huge white T-shirt with a lion on it, she had also let down her hair, around her neck she was wearing a thin sliver chain
“I’m sure how hot its>”
Lisa blew on it then took a mouthful, she tasted the gin but didn’t say anything
“Charlie wasn’t it ?”
“If your Ok I will…” he stopped himself “Sorry”
“That’s alright, please sit down.”
Charlie moved his feet a little but didn’t move
“I’m not going to start crying again if that want your scared of.”
This time Charlie sat down on the, he didn’t want to look Lisa in the eyes so he picked a spot just above her head, Lisa took one from the mug and begin to play with her sliver chain between her fingers, her mind was full of questions, which she couldn’t bring herself to ask so she started with the easy one
“Does Tony know ?”
“Yes your husband as been told.”!
Lisa stopped playing with the chain
“Sorry, I meant ex.”
“I guess you think I’m just other on of those girls who got pregnant to soon.”
Charlie shock his head
“No, I think your very brave, to do want you have done all on your own”
Lisa smiled a little
“I wasn’t always on my own, you know.”
She looked over at the other side of the room at the picture which stood on a small dressing table, Charlie followed the gaze and saw the picture was of Jenny about two years old sat in her pram, he looked back at Lisa.
“I don’t know what to say…I promise you we will get whoever did this.”
Lisa drank some more of the coffee
“I know you will.”
She let go of the chain laying it just between them
“Tell me something Charlie, have you ever lost someone?”
“Only my parents, but that’s the way of the world, not like this.”
“Your not like the others.”

Let Me Take You Down Page 35

Using Alec handkerchief Lisa wiped her eyes trying to focus
“What for DNA you mean.”
“Yes, you can take it from a hair brush.”
Lisa reached down for the mug and with shaking hands took a few mouthfuls, she put the mug down and then slowly herself out of the armchair and ambled across the room towards the pictures, Kyra glanced across the room to Charlie and together they walked thought kitchen and in a few seconds there was the sound of footsteps heading up stairs.
Alec and Ian watched Lisa carefully a little unsteady on her feet she reached up and took a picture from the wall, Alec saw it was a very young Jenny wearing a blue school uniform holding it to her chest she made her way back over to the chair.
She let herself fall back into the armchair pulling her legs up from the floor she rocked back and forward, Alec bent down level with Lisa and wrapped one arm around her shoulder, she stopped rocking letting her head rest on his arm, he took the picture from her and then sung his arm under Lisa’s legs lifting her into the air, she didn’t move just let it happen.
Alec carried Lisa into the kitchen,, he it was the same size as the front room, the floor was covered in soft lamented wood and the soft yellow walls were matched by a set small sandy coloured tiles which started at one side of the room, they ram along the far wall under a window and behind a sliver sink, then under two wall cupboards.
Next to them stood a huge double door fridge covered by children’s paintings in the middle of the room was a small round dinning table with four chairs just to the left was a small carpeted staircase leading upwards
Ian had followed in behind them but stopped at the dinning table, Alec made his way over to the stairs turning a little sideways slowly carried her up, reaching the small landing he saw to his left a door into the bathroom to his right another on which someone had hung a picture of a red steam train, in front of him was a small window and two more doors, taking a guess he slowly walked up to the first.
He pushed open the door with his foot it swung opened, walking over the threshold he found he’d made the right choose, the room was Lisa’s in the centre was a huge double bed covered with a sunset red duvet the light was coming from a wide window that looked out on to the back garden and green field beyond.
Alec made his way across the room the floor boards gave a small squeak, he laid Lisa on the bed moving two of the pillows under her head, she curled up and begin to cry softly into the bed, Alec drew the curtains shut took one last look at Lisa then left the room.
He let out a sigh then made his way over the landing to the second bedroom door, but then changed his mind he walked back to the staircase sat down on the first step and begin to massage the top of his leg.
Down in the kitchen Ian opened one of the cupboards seeing it was full of tins and packets of food he moved on, inside the next were a row of mugs and plates, behind them was a full unopened bottle of gin with one hand he took out a mug an d the gin, he both on the counter top and began to search around for the things to make coffee with,
He found a kettle just to the right of the sink and three jars marked coffee, tea and sugar, he poured a few inches of the coffee into mug and switched on the kettle, he opened the fridge and found a small bottle of milk, the kettle gave a small click as it switched itself off he poured the hot water into the mug and watched as it became black coffee, he stopped pouring with five inches to the top, he picked up the gin again with a thumb on the neck of the bottle he made a small nip with his nail.
He poured the measure into the coffee, lastly he picked up the milk and added this to turning the black coffee light brown, he put the gin back in the cupboard, he was about to pick up the mug when there was loud knock on the front door.
Inside Jenny’s room Kyra and Charlie were slowly going though her things each taking one side of the room, it was about half the size of the front room, the walls were a soft shade of pink, above the small single bed pushed up against the wall was a hung a huge poster of Kylie Minogue stood on stage dressed in her blue and gold showgirl outfit.
On the other side was a small wardrobe its doors covered with more posters, leaning to one side of it was a guitar, to the left of the bed was a computer table and lamp, under a window which looked out over the street was a small chest of draws with a folding mirror and a matching foot stool
Charlie moved the stool out of the way and knelt down he reached inside his coat and took out a small packet the movement caught Kyra’s eyes she turned, out of the packet Charlie out a set of plastic gloves
“Rule One Always wear gloves at a crime scene.”
“But this is not a crime scene.”
“Rule eight, Never take anything for granted.”
He threw the pocket over to her, she took out the remaining set and shaking her head she put them on., With gloved hands Charlie dug around in the bottom draw but found it was full of clothes, he moved on it was much like the first, the top however was full of small make-up bottles and two small boxes black with sliver pattern stars all over, the a hand made affair with her name craved into the lid, next them was a long handle hair brush.
Reaching inside his coat a second time he removed out a small see though bag, between fingers thumb he lifted out the brush and holding it up to the light he saw long thin brunette hairs deep in

Alec was the first to enter the house turning to his right and pushing open a second door followed by Ian, Kyra and Charlie
He found himself in a brightly coloured front room the right side of which was taken up by a huge white leather settee and a armchair, on the other side of the room were two alcoves each side of a wall mounted gas fire over it hung a framed picture of a family, in alcove closest to the window was a television the other a full bookcase and music centre
In the far wall was an open door leading into a equally colourful soft yellow kitchen, as well as more pictures only this time they shown two children a baby in the arms of a young girl, Kyra unzipped her coat and took out the file then walked across to look at the pictures on the far wall and did a quick comparison, Charlie moved to stand by the television and took out his notepad
“Please sit down.”
Lisa moved around the room and sat down in the armchair, Alec and Ian took places on the settee
“Now, what can I do for you ?”
Alec picked a spot just above Lisa’s head, but Ian started to talk
“My colleague is from Manchester, Miss Blake.”
Lisa’s face changed from puzzlement to one of vague understanding
“I see it has something to do with my ex-husband, What’s he done now.”
Alec felt something tense.
“Could I ask when was the last time you talked to him.”
“Not for a few days why ?”
this time was Alec who spoke
“You have a daughter with this man.”
“Jenny, why ? has something happened ?” she asked her voice almost a whisper
Alec blinked inside his head he swore
“I am afraid…”
Suddenly and horribly Lisa got the point of were Alec was going, In a very small voice deep within Lisa came out a question
“Please tell me, what happened ? were is she ?”
Alec put out his arm
“This morning I found what we believe to be…”
Something deep inside Lisa gradually buckled and tears began to fill her eyes.
“No not my little girl… you’ve made a mistake… she’s with Tony…its all a sick mistake.”
Alec took his hand and reached in his coat taking out a handkerchief which he gave Lisa, but all she did was hold it, Ian glanced across the room to see Kyra had disappeared into the kitchen looking for something th calm Lisa, there was the sound of running water and in a few seconds she was back carrying a small mug.
With shaking hands Lisa took the mug and tried to drink from it.
“Your wrong it’s a mistake.”
Then she have pictures, I want to see them, I am her mother.”
Charlie looked over at Alec who just nodded, he slowly went though the file and found a picture were Jenny had her eyes shut looking at peace and show it to Lisa
She looked at the picture for a few seconds everyone held their breath, and watched as slowly all the colour saw Charlie holding the file
“You drained out of her face and her eyes were now cold pin points of tears, she sank deeper into the armchair like a rag doll, with pain and shock Lisa let go of both the mug and picture, Alec was just in time to catch it before it hit the carpet, but the picture just floated down to her feel.
“Is there anyone you would like us to call.”
Kyra reached into her own coat for her phone, Lisa looked up at her as if seeing her for the first time.
“My mother I…”
Lisa moved around to her left towards a small table with tears in her eyes she picked up a small sliver phone and dialled a number
“Mum its me…” she whispered into the phone
But that was all she could do before a second wave of grief hit, she crumbled dropping the phone and the tears came too.
Alec reached across and picked up the phone
“Hello, Mrs Blake my name is Alec Prideaux, I’m with the police, I have some news about your granddaughter.”
There was no sound on the other end of the line.
“Mr Prideaux, I didn’t drive.”
Alec turned and looked across at Ian
“Ok were are you ?”
“15 Battersby Street just off Rochdale Old Road.”
Ian stood up, walking across the room taking out his own phone.
“I will be with you in ten minutes.”
“Thank you Mr Prideaux, We’ll be waiting.” There was a small click ending the call
Alec put the phone back on the small table.
“I am sorry to ask this Miss Blake, but could we see Jenny’s room.” Kyra asked

as they came round he put the car into the right lane facing a network of lanes most of them travelling wide and to the right.
At a set of lights Ian chose to stay on the right as they made their way around the curve of the road, the two lanes travelled level with each other until they passed an orange and grey building selling pre-packed flooring, the road opened up even wider as two lanes became three, two which made there way arise heading past a small bus shop and a row of shops.
Ian carried on past the shops but stayed on the right hand side of side the road, facing them as they moved along the road was a white coloured pub called ‘The Dusty Miller’ just as before the road split but this time into four each side of the pub, As the light went from red to green the sky filled with dark clouds then ruptured, spitting out a huge sheet of rain, Ian drove thought the lights and followed the road around to the right of the pub, but two thirds of the way up the road it became two and a short incline.
On each side of the road were houses, until it curved again this time to the right and houses were replaced with a small stone and fence, just as the wall ended there was a small junction travelling down into Woodhill Road.
Ian slowed down and took the turning, it lead pass into a mixed housing estate on one side were brick council houses and other smaller sand stone, the road split off to the right and the road became bumpy, Charlie noticed it was a cobble street for the next four yards, then tarmac again.
As they made there way down the road it was clear that most of the council homes were privately own with differently coloured boors and windows, the road became narrow with traffic claming measures the road spilt off again but this time to right.
The turn lead deeper into the estate it was set out in a half moon shape, trees lined each side further back off the road lay the houses in front of a few were parking spaces, Both Charlie and Kyra counted the numbers as Ian drove the car about half way around until he found a space just next to a tall green tree only a few feet away from number 45, but with the rain it seemed longer.
Ian switched off the engine and the sound of the rain beating down on the roof was the only thing they heard, Ian took a deep breath and undid his belt, Alec was the first to get out of the car, Charlie was next standing just under the tree, Kyra did the same by sliding along the back seat pushing the file into her coat, Ian slowly opened his door and driven under the tree, Alec was standing a few feet away hands deep in his pockets, his coat pulled to each side letting the rain just fall all over him.
“Let’s go then.”
Alec headed towards number 45, Charlie, Kyra and Ian followed a few steps behind.
From a distance number 45 looked just like the other semi-detached houses in the row, with the same PVC windows and dark brown front door, it was only when you got to the front gate could you tell that whoever lived here had taken time to add there own personality, the garden may have only the size of a stamp and covered over in grey stone flags but around the edge someone had put small flower boxes full of yellow and blue blooms.
In what Charlie guessed was the front room windows were long white vertical blinds on which was cast the shadow of someone moving around the room, the up stairs windows were yellow pulled down blinds, looking back down at the front door Alec saw even as the rain came down one of the widows were open letting in fresh air he opened the gate and crossed the garden in three strides.
He waited until the others had joined him and slowly reached for the door bell, as he did though the open window he heard the sound of a woman singing.
“Got me lookin so crazy right now your kiss, got me hopping you’ll save me right now.”
In his head Alec join in with the next few words, he took a deep breath and pushed the bell hard it rang with a loud ping, a few seconds later the sound of the singing stopped and the music was switched off and the shadow disappeared
“Just coming.”
Nothing happen, Alec glanced back at the others then back at the door as he heard the sound of a lock being opened.
A little puzzled and bewildered looking first at Alec then Ian and the others, was an auburn woman dressed in a baggy white T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans with red flowers running down then she had nothing on her feet, she didn’t look a day over 25, her soft blue eyes told a different story in the corners there was thin age lines, it was clear she had been dancing
“Yes can I help you ?”
The woman brushed her hair out of her eyes, Alec was taken a back a little, then Ian stepped in,
“Mrs Lisa Blake?”
“It’s Miss, but never mind, what do you want ?”
Alec pulled himself together and took a deep breath
“Miss Blake, we’re the police, may we come in?”
The rain was getting heavier now, pushing Alec’s fringe down his face, Lisa glanced from Alec then Ian moving her feet around on the rough door mat
“Do you have any kind of ID?”
Each in turn took out their ID’s and show Lisa
“Thank you.”
Lisa handed back Kyra’s ID and stepped to one side
“You better come in.”

set of lights but beyond them was a huge round-a-bout covered in freshly cut green grass and in the centre was a four foot wicker statue of an old woman sat in a rocking chair.
    “Were are we Boss, Summerisle?”
Alec drove the car around to the right of the round-a-bout then though the gap between two traffic lights he headed up the road towards the town centre with rows of shops and a car park on the other
Charlie was surprised by an old brightly painted wooden goods truck the kind steam engines once pulled, it had been filled with multicoloured flowers, Alec moved the car into the centre of the road just before an opening in the on coming traffic.
As they when right there was a row of late Victorian houses on the right on the left was the grey and glass building Kyra had seen, she saw a familiar coloured sign and a tall blue lamp which proclaimed the building to be Bury Police Headquarters
Even thought the road was dead end Alec didn’t stop he drove the car past the enormous steps of the entrance, he headed towards the small fence which marked the end of road, but just before he got there he slowed down and turned the wheel left rolled up the almost hidden entrance of the station car park, he stopped the car a few inches way from the red and white barrier which lay above the entrance, just to the right was a small dirty yellow poll with a small intercom.
Alec drew the car level with it and let down his window, the intercom buzzed into life
    “Can I help you ?”
Alec reached thought the open window
“DCI Alec Prideaux, to see DCI Ian Curtis.”
There was no answer from the intercom but the barriers was lifted a few seconds later, The first few rows were full so Alec drove around to the right it was only when he was making his way back towards the entrance, did he see a space which he skilfully put the car into.
He took a deep breath and undid his seat belt, without saying anything he slowly got out, Kyra put the pages of the report back together and inched her way out, Charlie moved to the right hands side of the seat he used a free hand to open the door being as careful as Kyra had.
He took out their coats, giving Kyra hers and Alec in turn she gave him the folder, he put on his own, Kyra had made her way around to the back of the car when saw Alec looking up at the fourth floor she couldn’t see what he was looking at, to her all that was in front of her was huge grey pebble building much like the one they had come from.
“Should I get the boxes ?” she asked to the back of his head
Alec didn’t seem to hear her so she asked again, this time he did turn around but his face didn’t look as if he’d any idea of what had been said
    “Excuse me sorry?”
    “The Boxes,”
Charlie rested his arms over the roof of the car, then the penny dropped
“No, first we see Ian, then Jenny’s mother.”
He pointed his keys at the car and locked the doors, then taking his coat pushed his hands into the pockets and headed back towards the entrance a few seconds later Kyra and Charlie followed, together they reached the steps
Entering the station they found themselves stood in a wide reception area it looked more like the reception of a corporate bank then a police station, everywhere was painted in soft warm colours of blue and grey, on their left hand side was a set of three doors inset in the wall, the right side of the room was taken up by a row of soft padded chairs but behind them was a mirrored wall and a small blue door, facing them was a wide desk was a young brunette woman working away at a computer keyboard what was a little odd she was wearing an everyday office suit.
Alec walked across the floor to her, she looked up as he reached the desk
    “HI can I help you.”
Alec reached to his coat for his ID
“I’m here to see DCI Ian Curtis, my name is Alec …
He didn’t get to finish because from somewhere above him someone shouted
Alec looked up to see stood on the branch of the staircase were two people, the first one was a man in the late 30’s dressed in shirt and tie hold a long overcoat this was Ian Curtis just to his right there was a woman in her 20’s with short flaxen coloured hair, unlike Ian she wasn’t dressed for going outside, she wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, Their made there way down the stairs, Charlie and Kyra join Alec  a few seconds later
“Alec, this Sally Jericho my DS.”
Ian moved to one side, Sally smiled
    “Kyra Harker and Charlie Drym.”
“I have set up a room for us to work in Sir.”
Alec took out his keys and handed them over to her
“I, think you will find everything you need.”
Charlie was about offer some help, but Ian put his coat on and headed to the door quickly followed by Alec and Kyra, Charlie smiled at Sally then ran to catch up
Ian made his way around the car park until he was stood by a sliver family size Toyota Prius, when everyone was set, Ian switched on the engine which gave a soft humming sound in a few seconds they were making it back down the street heading to the round- a-bout, at the junction Ian went left but
