Homicide Detective Nikki Heat.

Previously in Heat Wave – After arresting the van driver and getting nowhere. Heat pulls in the young doorman of Starr building and makes the van driver believe he working with the police, In the end she finds out that yes him and the van driver broke into the apartment but all the pictures were already gone. Additionally the woman who was found in Volvo is in in fact working as an art appraisal at Sotheby’s auction house.

And now the continuation.

Fourteen – Raley has been to Sotheby’s and has a copy of Barbara Deerfield calendar on they see that she had an appointment at Matthew Starr’s apartment day he was killed, which turned out her date of death as well, Barbara Deerfield colleagues were extremely and shocked by the news Raley tells Heat and that she was a very happy person. Also that the forensics have found the fibres on the balcon match the pair of jeans that Pochenko was wearing, plus his prints were on the outside of the window. Heat puts Raley back on the surveillance videos,

So she goes and checks up if there is anymore new information on Pocheko Rook makes a joke about maybe he on one of the reality TV shows where they get stranded on an island.

A few hours later she takes Raley a coffee, They watch as Miric and Pocheko walk up to the building and then zooming out the ID close up match his ring with one that left the marks on Barbara Deerfield, Rook still doesn’t really understand a few things Yes Pocheko had the ring on when first talking to Starr and then again when they saw Deerfield but the bruise on Starr came later without the ring, so he lost it when killing Deerfield. But why did Pocheko kill Deerfield first. Before Heat can answer Ochoa comes into the bullpen with a warrant.

Heat and Rook make their way up the brownstone apartment block, Rook asks Heat is she sure that whoever they are after is home, yes they she’s positive taking her stand in front of the door she moves Rook to the other side so he’s out of the way she knocks on the door and Buckley opens the door but quickly tries to close it on her and heads to the apartment window, But Ochoa is sat on the fire escape outside. Heat turns to see Rook is behind her.

So now under arrest Buckley calls for a lawyer, which Heat will get for him but first she wants information on Doc. Who put the crew together but is one man short so that’s why Buckley was called in And as she tell him all this Ochoa searchs the apartment, and finds a digital camera with the words property of Sotheby’s written on it.

What I think – It all starting to link into each other, Pocheko, his mate and now Buckley are all now one huge chain of action. But yet the question still remains who has the paintings and how did they take them. Rook and Heat have so far been able to keep their night together to themselves and not let it interfere with the investigation in fact Rook has some what claimed down a little but still puts himself in unnecessary dangerous situations much to the displeasure of Heat.

So that’s your lot for is week as always thank you for reading and I hope you can join me for the next chapter of Heat Wave but until then whoever you are and whether you be bye for now and see you next week.

Bookends – Book Review – Tie In – Richard Castle – Heat Wave – Ten

The following blog contains spoilers for the Richard Castle book Heat Wave is this your one and only warning, leave now if you do not want this book to be spoilt

A New York real estate tycoon plunges to his death on a Manhattan sidewalk. A trophy wife with a past survives a narrow escape from a brazen attack. Mobsters and moguls with no shortage of a reason to kill trot out there alibis. and then, in the stifling grip of a record heatwave comes another shocking murder a sharp turn in the tents journey into dirty little secrets at the wealthy, Secrets that prove to be fatal secrets that lay hidden in the dark until one NYPD detective shines a light.

Homicide Detective Nikki Heat.

Previously in Heat Wave -Heat makes her way home carrying the print Rook gave her, only to find out her block is in blackout. And when she gets home she puts Rook on his ass for jumping out of the dark, leaving him bruised jaw. Then they have a black and white pass them getting the wrong idea. Heat waves them off and they walked inside. Lighting your apartment with candles and a hurricane lamp Heat calls the precinct and asks if she should come in what is tall she is better off to stay where she is. So she helps Rook put ice on his jaw and they eventually use the ice to make margaritas which works as a catalyst and they kiss. And Heat takes him to her bedroom.

And the continuation.

Ten – Once they are in her room they make love, both letting go and being free. Rook’s passion matching hers. In the early hours of the next morning Heat wakes up with Rook by her side, In her head she questions how it happened, yes from very beginning there had been a spark of attraction, and had denying the feeling, avoiding relationships done more harm. Rook made the world around her playful, he showed her the world anew. And she rolls towards him and slips down his chest.

Three hours later Heat’s phone wakes them both up, its Lauren on the other end, she’s working a crime crime scene in fact she’s at an impound lot for cars and she has information that he might find useful on her case. But Lauren hears Rook but Heat is able to brush her off. Much to Rook’s dismay.

Outside Rook is able to get a minivan cab heading northbound, Heat gives the driver Rook address which Rook doesn’t understand shouldn’t they be going to the impound lot. Heat wants Rook to change his clothes, she also does not want them turning up at the crime scene in the same car. Heat is going to lean on the lab for the forensics report on Pochenko jeans. The cab pulls up and Rook makes his way into his building looking like a rejected puppy.

Heat badged herself the gate of the impound and found Lauren who is next to and you wish metallic Volvo wagon and in that the driver’s seat is a woman slumped down, the top of the head pointed out of the open car. a Jane Doe A little impatiently heat asks what the connection is, Lauren has found a ring which matches the brushing on Matthew Starr, the ring was found on the floor of the Volvo. So now we have a female aged fifty death by strangulation by persons known or unknown sitting in the backseat. Lauren believes the ring belongs to whoever strangled and probably came off in the struggle. After a few minutes Heat thinks she seen this woman before of the on the tapes from the Guilford, but just her phone rings and its Rook, he and Roach are starting in Matthew stars department after a call about a burglary all the paintings every single one of them have now been stolen.

What I think – Well that was something, Mr Castle nicely folded the sex into the story and then just got on with the story and the mystery of Matthew Starr, he didn’t make it the whole chapter and didn’t give Rook the power in this relationship it’s all Heat, Rook is sent home and Heat is back to being Detective Heat once again. I hope that this reminds the power play and that Rook doesn’t try to use the sex as some kind of hold over her or any problems with her work environment. We don’t need the the tired old cliche of them falling out and then falling back in beds with each other.

Now back to the case Lauren now has a mystery Jane Doe, with links to Matthew Starr well hus building at least and who owns the ring that made made the marks on her and Starr, will it hold the vital DNA that will close the case. and will Pochenko even be found ?

So that’s your lot for is week as always thank you for reading and I hope you can join me for the next chapter of Heat Wave but until then whoever you are and whether you be bye for now and see you next week.

Bookends – Book Review – Tie In – Richard Castle – Heat Wave – Seven

Homicide Detective Nikki Heat.

Previously in Heat Wave – Nikki is out of the night with Lauren and they are talking about Matthew Starr’s murder and the fact he was thrown over the rail not pushing. When Rook calls her he tells her that it about the case, she leaves Lauren and heads out to Rook. When she gets to Rook place it turns out to be a little bit of trick and want it really turns out to be a poker game. With a few of Rook’s friends we even meet Rook’s mother who spots Nikki’s liking for Rook

And now the continuation

Seven -Nikki is getting something from her wardrobe when she hears a noise which makes her freeze stock still, her world stops her windows are open but why, in a spilt second she runs into the living room. Only to find Pochenko holding her Sig Sauer, Pochenko has been following her all day and now makes her switch on the lights but Nikki felt more violated in th interview room than standing naked here. He makes her move closer to him but in one she wedges her thumb into the Hammer of the god why she pushes away and slips into his right the floor and it all starts to get messy, They fight and Nikki is able to get her front door open and yell. But that doesn’t help in the end Pochenko carries her to the bedroom just as it looks hopeless Nikki finds a iron from the bed both bruning Pochenko and knocking him sideways she goes back for her Sig Sauer but when she get back his gone and outside emergency sirens and lights are now heading her way.

The next morning, Rook, Roach and Ochoa wait for Nikki after her meeting the captain, Rook can’t believe they are taking the attempt on Nikki as just one of those things, they have Miric back in questioning and maybe the marks on Nikki’s neck match the ones on Matthew Starr. So in short Rook thinks Pochenko throw Starr over the rail and for once Nikki thinks he right . Pochenko is now on the run

When Rocah left and Nikki is downloading a report from the forensic accountants, there is a package delivered to her, a flat box the size and weight of a hallway mirror it’s a print of Carnation, Lily Lily, Rose from the Met Museum. it was one of the pictures her and Rook saw at Matthew Starr’s place. Its from Rook Nikki laughs covering to cover the small quiver on her lower lip.

At noon Nikki stands up to go and Rook does the same telling her that she needs protection but she says she a cop she’s is the protection, And he let’s her go, but on the drive to Midtown she starts to feel a little guilty for ditching him. She drops in on Noah Paxton unexpectedly. She shows him photos of Miric and Pochenko but no he doesn’t know them, next question how did Matthew pay for his gambling all cash. Morgan Donnelly did he know about the affair yes he did. One last question there is a irregularity, Noah was hiding money for Matthew Starr child for college but Starr found it in the end then it turns out Kimberly was doing the same and when Noah found out she was devastated beyond words all of which was ten days ago.

What I think – Well that pretty powerful image, Mr Castle has taken quite a few liberties with basing his character of Nikki Heat on are detective Beckett and I can see why she was not best pleased when of the book first appeared on shelves. But having said that it does show Heat’s human side. To face such a situation and still be able to maintain her composure does take a lot have strength. Yet even when Rook does something nice for her she doesn’t really know act around him in fact she runs away from him. How this will work its self in long run will be interesting to find out.

As for the case I hope it doesn’t just turn into a chase hide and seek type of story. With all the leads Heat has dug up it would a shame if all that push under the rug, without them being delt with. So that’s your lot for is week as always thank you for reading and I hope you can join me for the next chapter of Heat Wave but until then whoever you are and whether you be bye for now and see you next week.

Homicide Detective Nikki Heat.

To the extraordinary KB and all my friends that at the 12th

One – One West 77th Street New York, we meet Detective Nikki Heat she just pulled up to the crime scene, going though her little rituals before walking the two hundred feet to the Guilford apartment building and then to the La Chaleur Belle were Detective Raley sits with a distraught family at the service door is Detective Ochoa talking to the staff. Nikki walks over the ME Lauren Parry.
“Male Unknown, No wallet, no Identification, preliminary age around 60 65. Severe blunt force trauma to the head neck and chest…No face, so we’ll comb The area for any dental otherwise not much to ID after that impact this is where he landed.”

Lauren shows Heat were the man fell, and she walks over the to the wreckage on the sidewalk, and from behind her she hears

“It’s raining men”

She doesn’t need to turn around she knows who it’s Jameson Rook Pulitzer Prize Winning magazine journalist who been researching an article for the last month on New York’s finest. and is a little put out no one told him he’s had ring Ochoa to find out. As they stand there one of Jameson Rook’s fans wants an Autograph and it’s not his latest print edition story she wants signing,

While all this going on Detective Ochoa Find out the victim is from the building they are standing next too he’s falling from the 6th floor, Matthew Starr real estate mogul who left behind a wife Kimberly and a seven year old son.

Heat interviews Kimberly with Rook sitting in, She tells them, she and her son were at the Dino-Bites, she’s not to impressed by Rook or the fact Heat is asking questions

“Good, Because my husband wouldn’t like that. He thought all reports were assholes”

“Why are you asking stupid questions when you could be looking for his killer.”

But Heat knows that she’s venting having been the same place as a nineteen year old, Kimberly in the end is mollified in the end but kicks them both anyway. Outside Raley and Ochoa tell them it was not suicide, and just as they head back down from the sixth floor and back on the sidewalk Kimberly Starr is gripped by unknown man to the side of a van. But seeing the police the guy lets her go

Ochoa, attends to Kimberly as Heat and Raley head after the guy Rook keeping pace and in fact almost get there man but the guy heads down the subway, and Nikki Heat goes after them both.

What I think -Well in this chapter we have met what I guessing are all the main players starting with Nikki Heat and endding with Jameson Rook, I not to sure if we are in Nikki’s head or watching all this from on high because there are a few lines that don’t make sense, We The audience are asked to say Trophy Wife about Kimberly Starr halfway through the chapter and then we switch to Nikki’s feelings about Rook towards the end of the chapter.

The switch back at the end of the chapter makes you think Rook has lost the unknown man and its left a short cliffhanger as Nikki follows them both.

It’s a a fun way to start a book with a Copse on the floor and a foot chase through the streets of New York, now it will all work out in the end I am not sure but it looks like a very enjoyable read.

Yes know I said I was going to cover two chapters on each blog post but I changed my mind and it would be unfair to leave things out, And so that’s your lot for is week as always thank you for reading and I hope you can join me for the next chapter of Heat Wave but until then bye for now and see you next week.

His first novel, In a Hail of Bullets, published while he was still in college, received the Nom DePlume Society’s prestigious Tom Straw Award for Mystery Literature. Castle currently lives in Manhattan with his daughter and mother, both of whom infuse his life with humor and inspiration.

Or so says the authors page in the book, it’s is a bite size biography of man only exists in the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) TV show Castle created by Andrew W. Marlowe which originally ran a total of eight seasons from March 9, 2009 to May 16, 2016. in the United States Of America and shown across the world on other network Television stations, and the one in the United Kingdom called Alibi were I saw it.
Starting Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle and Stana Katic as NYPD Homicide detective Kate Beckett
Within the show Richard Castle wrote a set of books called the Nikki Heat series modeled on his complex relationship with NYPD Detective Kate Beckett. There is a lot more to the television, than that but I am taking the book on their own merits. As if Mr Castle were a real person. (and yes I know there is way to find out who really wrote the books but that takes away the fun) in total he wrote nine books.

  • Heat Wave
  • Naked Heat
  • Heat Rises
  • Frozen Heat
  • Deadly Heat
  • Reging Heat
  • Driving Heat
  • High Heat
  • Heat Storm

In the next blog post, I will be starting at the beginning with Heat Wave I only have very vague idea of want the book is about, I have three versions of the first Nikki heat book one being an American hardback copy published by Hyperion which a first edition a second paperback one first mass market edition with a interview with Mr Castle in the back and a ebook Amazon Kindle edition which at first look is Carbon copy of the hardback, To make my life simple I will be using the ebook edition.
So I hope you can join me as enter the world of Nikki Heat and her life on the streets of New York as always that’s your lot for this week thank you for reading and see you next week.

Bookends – Book Review – Tie In’s – Introduction

When a book becomes very popular in mainstream culture the odds are there will be a movie adaptation in the works very soon after publication and then you get the inevitable debate about the book and the movie being one better than the other in exactly the same way I did the all the right words not necessarily in the right order blogs, last year I took two books that I read and compared then with two films that had have been made from the source material of the book.

You also get the simplified version of the movie written into a novelization now I could dig out novelizations of several films, But that would that would be somewhat too easy this time I’m going to look at books that have been written because of television series. Two television series one thing science fiction and the other being a police procedural set on the streets of New York.

I have been a very big fan of Star Trek and all is incarnations from is original series of the 1960s to the 2017 Discovery Netflix series now I could take a novelization from each of those incarnations but that would be far too simple and far too easy, the series I am going to look at is a series of novels based in the Star Trek universe called Star Trek New Frontier, written/created by John J. Ordover and Peter David, which have links into the trek universe but does carve out its own place. and so far has run to 19 books not counting series within series

For those who like their world’s to be a lot more grounded in reality I will also be covering the tie in books for the ABC : American Broadcast Company TV show Castle starring Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic. Here the premise is a lot more simple a character within the television show is an author and some bright spark at ABC as a marketing ploy decided that they would release a book as if the character had written it, in the real world and by the end of the shows run there were nine books all written by “Richard Castle”. All based on the characters experiences within the show itself

So this how its going to work I am going to start first with the Richard Castle book Heat Wave and do two chapters each blog post until the book is finished and then switch to first Star Trek New Frontier House Of Cards and keep doing so until all the books in each world has been finished. I know I will run out of Castle books before the Trek ones ends so I going something when that happens. what that is yet I am not sure but I work something.

I do hope you can join me each week for this new journey, so that’s your lot for this week as always thank you for reading.
