THE EIGHTEENTH DAY MONDAY 20 DECEMBER – pages 461 to 469

The Red October.
Mancuso Ryan and Ramius all stand on the outside of the red October’s control tower she has been made ship-shape enough to carry on on her own steam, with the Dallas and Pogy submerge somewhere after adding for additional interference so they cannot be picked up on any sonra or radio. They talk about what it means to be truly free and ramius is surprised that they might run into a member of the public as they enter the Norfolk Channel. Ramius asks the men about their families and if they have wives to which Mancuso replies he will miss another Christmas as their ship will be sent out again. Ryan tells her that he’s on family as well and says that when everything is straightened out you would like to get everybody together for a meal and have the CIA paid for it.

Norfolk Virginia
20 minutes later they are at their destination huge concrete box over 800 feet long larger than it had to be covered with a steel roof over satellite could not see what was inside.
With help the red october is locked into place and ramius gives the order to the remaining crew to come top side of the boat is then asked by Dan Foster chief naval operations Norfolk for permission to come aboard.
Ryan is then takeaway in gray chevy and then fly by helicopter back to the CIA headquarters by this time he is too tired to argue and think much of the pain of the journey

CIA HEADQUARTERS
Back where it all began Ryan is debrief and he is very upset that they couldn’t rescue the other members at the Russian submarine that run into the red october but as one of the Admirals points out there at war and if they were to rescue the crew members what would they have worked for in the end. All Ryan really wants to do is go home but he’s pleased to find out the British office it will be ok

Norfolk Naval Shipyard
The crewmen of the Dallas are back to their boat and ordered to stay out for 30 Day more during which time the crew will be encouraged to forget everything they have seen heard or wondered about.
The red october sits alone in the dried up as the water slowly drains away from her already a select group of engineers and technicians for beginning her inspection.
As for Ramius and his officers their person gear was taking off and they were taken by bus to the same airfield wine use an hour later they were in a CIA safe house in the Rolling Hills of charlottesville Virginia.

Dulles International Airport
Ryan missed the sunrise be bordered the TWA 747 that left us on time 7:05 in the morning sky overcast and Ryan did something he never done before for the first time in his life Jack Ryan fell asleep on an airplane.

What I think – well that’s the end of it the end of The Hunt for Red October book and like I said in the previous blog post the book and it ended in the last chapter with them heading literally into the sunset for Norfolk this chapter seems to be just tying up all the loose Ends, Well some of the Loose Ends anyway the Russian spy for 1 I don’t think really had a proper ending and the interesting part I think would be to see what captain ramius would be like after a year in the Americas. All in all it’s very enjoyable but if you’d like to find point and the little details that Mr Tom Clancy seems to enjoy putting into his books that go back stories of many of the characters and the history of pieces of equipment that are used.
Next week we shall begin the film version of the book how much will translate from page to screen is yet to be seen and I have a feeling that some of the chapters within the DVD setup will be smaller than the pages of the book I will have to work out where exactly to compare it to and not end up boring both myself and you the reader.

So as always if you have been thank you for reading and I hope you can join me next week as we restart telling the tale for the the hunt for Red October.
