Most people know Charles Dickens wrote a book called A Christmas Carol which tells the story of a bitter old miser and his 24 hour change, after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.
But in the 1866 Christmas edition of All the Year Round he wrote a smaller less well know tail called The Signal-Man just like A Christmas Carol he uses a ghost of things Yet to Come,
A traveller discovering a signal box deep in a railway cutting calls down the signal-man who works it, ‘Halloah, below there’, waving with his right arm while placing his left arm across his face to shield his eyes from the sun.’ at first the signal-man is scarred and shocked but the traveller over a few day befriends the signal-man and so the tail unfolds.
I myself think its a far better to story that A Christmas Carol because its just so simple two people trying to understand the world around them and the psychology mind set people have.
But I want you to make up your own mind so to this end below are links to first LibriVox.org who have the tail as Mp3 for free
the second a link to Youtube and playlist for the BBC short film from 1976 starting Denholm Elliott (the signalman) and Bernard Lloyd (the traveller)
I hope you enjoy it as much I as do
